CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - NC State women's soccer fell to host No. 3 North Carolina, 1-0 on Thursday, Oct.20, at UNC's Fetzer Field. The Pack held the Tar Heels without a goal, with the exception of a penalty kick at 30:14 by Kacey White. NC State keeper, senior Kim Selz, finished eight saves. It was the fourth time the Wilmington, N.C. native has made eight or more saves in a match this season. Freshman Ashleah Dingle led the Wolfpack with four shots, including three on goal. NC State hosts Clemson on Sunday, Oct. 23, at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
"It was a great game for us today," said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. "I was very proud of how intense this team played. It's unfortunate that such a well-played game is decided by a penalty kick."
The first half was fairly quiet for both teams. North Carolina scored the first half's only goal on a penalty kick at 30:14 after a foul just inside the half circle. It was NC State's first penalty kick given up this season. UNC's Kacey White took the PK and placed it into the bottom right corner as NC State senior goalkeeper Kim Selz dove to her left. NC State posted three shots, including two from freshman Ashleah Dingle. Both of her shots went wide, one to each side of the net. Dingle took her first aim in the second minute, but had a better chance in the 20th minute. From 20 yards center, Dingle's ball went just high and to the right, but kept the UNC defense on its toes for the remainder of the half. Sophomore midfielder Jessica O'Rourke played a strong first half at center mid to keep NC State's transition game flowing. She made numerous tackles to win balls and sent passes in all directions down the flank to Dingle, freshman Lindsay Vera and senior Lydia McBath. The Wolfpack defense held UNC to six total shots and just two on goal, both were saved by Selz. Elizabeth Guess had two shots, one on goal, for the Tar Heels. Wolfpack freshman Kasie Shover recorded the Pack's third shot in the 32nd minute.
North Carolina wasted no time after the break to get going offensively. Within the first eight minutes, UNC posted two solid shots, both on goal and both saved by Selz. Perhaps the best scoring opportunity for the Tar Heels came in the 51st minute when Lindsay Tarpley fed a ball through to a slashing Jaime Gilbert up the middle. NC State's Selz was there to make the stop as Gilbert turned for a sharp shot at the top left corner of the keeper box. Selz played fearless the entire match. On one particular corner kick by Yael Averbach from the nearside, Selz darted to her right and jumped up to make the interception. On another play minutes later she cut off a cross headed for Tarpley flashing in from the left side. NC State had a good scoring opportunity in the 68th minute after a UNC foul on the left side two yards out of the box. O'Rourke took the kick and sent a cross in to Dingle, but the Tar Heels' keeper, Ali Winget was there for the pick it off. NC State's next possession was also its first corner kick in the last two matches. Freshman Tami Krzsewzski bended her ball in towards the net, but Carolina's defense was there to knock it out. The Pack continued to ride its offensive momentum with a solid scoring opportunity in the 78th minute. Junior Mandela Schumacher-Hodge collected a loose ball on the left side 15 yards off the midline and passed to Dingle on the right side just inside the top corner of the box. The quickly paced ball reached Dingle's foot at the right moment for Dingle to strike hard for the scoring chance. Winget was there to make the startling save. On the next play, NC State's Krzrewzski fired a short shot from the left side that Winget tipped over the cross bar. The Pack's four shots resulted in three shots on goal with eight minutes left in the half. Schumacher-Hodge posted the Pack's last shot with just over one minute to play.
Tonight's match marked the seventh loss this season in which NC State has fallen by a score of 1-0.
NC State will host Clemson on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 1 p.m. at SAS Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. The final home game marks the senior salute for the Wolfpack as well.
