CARY, N.C. - NC State women's soccer fell, 1-0, to visiting No. 10 Boston College on Sunday, Oct. 16. With the loss, the Wolfpack dropped to 6-9-0 overall and 2-5-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Eagles improved to 10-3-1 and 4-3-0 in ACC action. Boston College scored at 7:58 with a shot by Caroline Walden from the left side. The goal was her third of the season. NC State's Kim Selz posted seven saves on the day. The 1-0 loss marked the sixth loss this season the Pack has fell at such a close margin. NC State travels to No.3 North Carolina on Thursday for a 7 p.m. match in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Boston College put six shots on goal in the first half, forcing NC State's senior netminder, Kim Selz, to stay on her toes. The Eagles' Carolina Walden posted two solid shots within two minutes. The first nearly scored, but hit the far post as she turned from the right side of the field. The second chance at 7:58 went in, but this time Walden was on the left side. Teammate Kia McNeil had just taken a shot herself, sending it high. She was there however to corrall a loose ball and feed it to Walden racing down the left flank. Her third goal of the season put the Eagles up 1-0 heading into halftime at SAS Soccer Park. NC State posted two shots in the half. The first, a rocket from junior Jessica O'Rourke from the left side, went wide to the left in the sixth minute. The Wolfpack's Mallory Schmidt took a shot from the right side in the 36th minute, but it also went wide left.
The second half was managed almost entirely by NC State. The Wolfpack held Boston College to just two shots, both on goal within the first three minutes. Boston College nearly scored its second goal after a shot by Laura Georges from the right side was pushed up over the bar by Selz. The ball actually hit the crossbar and bounced back into play. Selz was there to cover the ball and keep the score at 1-0. NC State finished with four shots in the half, one on goal. In the 88th minute, freshman Lindsay Vera struck the ball from about 16 yards out on the right side and sent it towards the far left post. The ball barely missed the inside of the post as it skimmed by and landed out of bounds. The Wolfpack's final shot on goal was taken by sophomore Jessica O'Rourke with 42 seconds remaining from just inside the 18-yard box. BC's keeper, Arianna Criscione was there to make the save.
NC State has one remaining home game, a 1 p.m. match on Sunday, Oct. 23, against Clemson. However, before then, the Wolfpack will travel to Chapel Hill to take on the No. 3 ranked North Carolina Tar Heels at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20.
