RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State wrapped up a five-match home stand with a 3-1 loss to Georgia Tech Saturday at Reynolds Coliseum. Stefani Eddins led the Wolfpack (6-11, 0-9 ACC) with 17 kills and five blocks, but the Yellow Jackets (10-7, 6-2 ACC) couldn't be stopped, winning the match with scores of 30-19, 30-23, 18-30, 30-28.
"We talked about not letting last night's loss affecting us today, but we still came out flat today," said NC State head coach Mary Byrne. "I'm proud of us though, for coming back in games three and four. We made some adjustments and they played much better. We've been stressing getting our hitting percentage up and that sluggish start didn't help."
The Wolfpack got off to a slow start in the first game hitting .062 as a team with nine kills while Georgia Tech put away 19 kills with a .244 team attack percentage. NC State warmed up in game two hitting .212, but the Yellow Jackets had 10 more kills and were able to hold on for a seven-point win.
After the break the Pack came out and played a formidable third game, hitting a blazing .560 as a team and holding Georgia Tech to a .083 team attack percentage, to win by 12. Eddins had six kills on six attempts as the Pack ripped off three five-points runs to push the match to a fourth game. With a renewed confidence, NC State exchanged the lead with the Yellow Jackets three times up to a 9-9 tie in game four and fought back from a 17-12 deficit to narrow it to one at 29-28, but Georgia Tech went on to close the game and win the match.
Eddins, who leads the ACC in attack percentage, hit a blistering .536 on the day, while fellow senior middle blocker Adeola Kosoko added 16 kills, sevn digs and five blocks. Junior setter Melissa Rabe led NC State with 44 assists and sophomore libero Andrea Bentley posted a team-high 15 digs. Freshman defensive specialist Shawn Carroll provided a pair of service aces.
NC State returns to action next weekend when it travels north to take on Boston College on Friday, Oct. 21 in Chestnut Hill, Mass., at 8:00 p.m., and Maryland on Sunday, Oct. 23 in College Park, Md. at 1:00 p.m.
