COLLEGE PARK, Md. - NC State women's soccer fell 2-1 in overtime at Maryland on Thursday, Oct. 13. The Wolfpack, now 6-8 overall and 2-4 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Terrapins improved to 4-8-1 and 2-3-1 in the ACC. Junior Carol Tognetti scored her fifth goal on the season to help NC State even the score at 1-1 and forced the overtime period. Maryland's Sarah Sample netted the game-winner at 92:16 to give Maryland the win. NC State hosts No. 10 Boston College at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 16 at SAS Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.
"It was a tough start for us after we gave up the early goal," said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. "We played much better in the second half and evened the score to go into overtime. We just gave up a cross in the box in overtime to give Maryland the win. I thought we played a good game, just couldn't put it away in the end."
Maryland, which dominated the game and out shot the Wolfpack 30-13, took an early 1-0 lead on Kimmy Francis' team-leading third goal of the season in the ninth minute of play. An NC State defender was whistled for a foul just outside the Wolfpack 18-yard box, giving Francis a free kick from 24 yards. The senior from Richboro, Pa., sent a low line drive, through a pack of NC State and Maryland players and past Wolfpack goalkeeper Kim Selz, into the lower left corner of the net.
The Terps continued to pressure the Wolfpack defense, but were unable to score another goal in regulation on Selz, who finished the game with 12 saves.
NC State, which didn't have many quality offensive opportunities, tied the game in the 78th minute when junior Carol Tognetti found the ball at her feet after a scramble in front of the Maryland goal. Tognetti fired a shot that bounced off the bottom of the crossbar and into the Terrapin net for her fifth goal of the season. Sophomore Jessica O'Rourke and freshman Tami Krzeszewski provided the assists on the play.
Just three minutes into the first overtime, freshman Kaila Sciascia, who was making her first start in the midfield this season, sent a cross from the far left corner of the Wolfpack defensive third to the far right post of the NC State net where Sample finished it with her right foot to end the game.
Francis' goal, the 22nd of her career, brings her career point total to 66, which ties her for third all-time at Maryland with Robin McCullough.
NC State freshman Lindsay Vera led the Pack with four shots, including three on goal, which forced Resnick to make seven saves. Senior goalkeeper Kim Selz posted a career high 12 saves, including nine in the second period. She had made eight saves in two previous matches entering tonight's game at Ludwig Field.
