STANLEY, N.C. (TarHeelTour.com) - Jason Moon, a former NC State golfer, won the Cowans Ford Classic on the Tar Heel Professional Golf Tour Thursday. Moon shot 14 strokes under par to tie for first place and then dropped a 35-foot birdie putt to win the first playoff hole earning $9,000 for the victory at the par 72 Cowans Ford Country Club in Stanley, N.C.
Moon, who tasted victory last month at the Olde Sycamore Open, claimed his second win of the year on the 16th hole, which served as the first playoff hole. Moon's putt was one that players usually hope to two putt, but the former All-American for the Wolfpack had his putter in the air with 6 feet to go as it curled in to put all the pressure on his playoff opponent, Scott Feaster. Feaster's 15-foot birdie putt caught the right edge of the hole and spun out to end the drama.
"I missed a couple of three footers during the round, but I was able to put those behind me and stay positive all day," said Moon. "I looked at the scoreboard a few times and knew that I was in contention, but with some birdie holes on the back nine, you can't assume that the field will come back to you. This gives me a lot of confidence heading down to Florence, South Carolina for the first stage of PGA Tour Qualifying School."
Another former NC State golfer, Chris Mundorf, tied for third place at 13 under, winning $2,750, while his former Wolfpack teammate, David Sanchez, tied for seventh at 11 under, winning $1,313.
The Tour will take the next two weeks off before finishing the 2005 season with the Anderson & Strudwick Tour Championship. For more information, visit www.tarheeltour.com.
