Wolfpack Swimming and Diving Falls to Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. - The NC State men's and women's swimming and diving teams were swept by the Clemson Tigers on Saturday, Jan. 29 in Clemson, S.C. The men fell 143-88, while the women battled to a close 135-108 decision. For the men, Cullen Jones won the 50 free and 100 free, Lyle Babcock won the 200 butterfly, Rob Yeager won the 200 breaststroke and the 400 freestyle relay. The women were lead by Molly Culberson, who swept the 1-meter and 3-meter diving and wins by Jess Koenig in the 200 IM and 200 backstroke, Catherine Parks in the 200 butterfly and the 400 medley relay team.
Jones swept the 50 and 100 free once again this season, continuing his run as one of the top sprinters in the conference. He swam a 20.20 50 free, as he has swam a sub 21 second 50 freestyle in all six swims this season. Jones won the 100 free as well, posting a 46.56.
Babcock would secure a first place finish in the 200 butterfly, as the transfer has been a strong swimmer all season in the event. He swam a 1:53.15 on the day.
Yeager had another strong breaststroke swim, taking first with 2:04.67. He holds the top-time on the season for NC State in the event with a 2:02.00, just narrowling missing the NC State top-10 performances. Yeager does holds four of the top-10 times for the event.
The men continued its strong relay times, taking first in the 400 freestyle relay (3:06.00) behind the team of Chris Schenck, Kevin Devine, Scott Dettloff and Cullen Jones.
NC State's women's team finished strong against the Tigers, and narrowly fell 135-108. Culberson took first in both the 1-meter (296.73) and 3-meter (307.73).
Koenig again showed her versatility with wins in the 200 IM and 200 backstroke. Her 200 IM was 2:09.53, while her 200 back time was 2:06.93, her fifth best time this season in eight swims.
Parks was strong in the 200 butterfly, touching the wall at 2:08.19.
The women's relay team took first in the 400 medley, as Kendall Smith, Halle Kiehlmier, Victoria Niemeyer and Kerry Whitson took home the title against the Tigers.
The women's swimming and diving team will return to the pool tomorrow at 1 pm against Richmond at the Willis Casey Natatorium on NC State's campus.
