RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State women's tennis team closed out its stay at the Georgia Invitational on Sunday, Jan. 23, sweeping three doubles matches and earning one win in singles competition. The Pack took on neighboring Georgia State in doubles, before battling No. 69 Mississippi State in the one-on-one rounds.
Starting off the day in doubles against Georgia State, junior Barbara Orlay and freshman Elin Stahl Johansson won their first spring dual match against Anne Breiholtz and Annamaria Forgacs, 8-4. Freshman Julia Roach and junior Virginia Romero followed their teammates with the first spring dual win of their own, as they dominated Brite Kowing and Mateja Podgorsek, 8-2. In the final doubles contest, senior Danielle Stadelmann teamed with sophomore Allison Barry to take on Simona Foltyn and Kiera Strickland. While the match served as Barry's first appearance at the tournament, Stadelmann collected a doubles win on the first day of the event. The duo helped to complete a Wolfpack sweep of doubles action after winning their match, 8-4.
In singles, the Pack faced another nationally ranked competitor in No. 69 Mississippi State. At No. 1 singles, Orlay, currently ranked No. 121 nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), won her first match of the spring over Anastasia Kugakolova after dropping the first set. Orlay battled back to claim the second set and then cruised to victory by dominating the third frame, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0. Senior Kristin Lam then fell to No. 28 Zsuzsanna Fodor, 6-2, 6-2.
Stadelmann then faced No. 124 Tarryn Rudman. While Stadelmann played well, Rudman wound up claiming the win, 6-3, 6-1. At No. 4 singles, Polina Kokoulina handed Roach her first lost of the spring in two sets, 6-1, 6-3.
Sophomore Agustina Arechavaleta made her first appearance of the day at No. 5 singles against Magdi Rekasi. Arechavaleta battled, but eventually fell to Rekasi, 6-3, 6-2. Renne Joseph then handed a loss to Romero, 6-2, 6-1, in the Pack's final singles match.
While the matches will count towards player records, teams scores will not be kept.
NC State returns home to indulge in a week of practice before hosting two home meets next Saturday, Jan. 29, at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on campus. The Wolfpack will welcome Appalachian State at 11 am, before taking on Western Carolina at 5 pm.
