LONG BEACH, Calif. - NC State rising junior Cullen Jones qualified for a berth in the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials when he posted a 50 meter freestyle time of 23.37 on February 10 at the U.S. Swimming National Championship. Now, five months later, Jones is ready to swim in the 50 meter free preliminaries on Monday, July 12 in Long Beach, California. Updated 7/12/04.
Jones was impressive in Long Beach, becoming the second fastest in the U.S. among 20 year-olds, and the fifth youngest to place in the top-30. His time of 23.48 was slightly off of his qualifying time, but he did move up ten spots from his time trial time.
His time at the NCAA Championships, 22.31, ranked 79th in the world, and was among the top-10 in terms of youngest swimmers to post a time on the top-100. He was also tied for the fifth fastest time among swimmers born in 1984 or earlier in the USA.
Jones, who just finished his sophomore season, had the fourth fastest time for any sophomore in the NCAA Championship in the 50 meter free and his time ranked in the top-25 in the country.
He was the fastest sprinter in the ACC, winning both the 50 meter freestyle and 100 meter freestyle events with the conference's fastest time on the year in both events to automatically qualify for the NCAA Championship.
The 50 meter freestyle prelims will be held today at 12:00 pm eastern time, and GoPack.com will have the results of the event at that time. For more information on the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials, visit the official website at U.S. Swim.org.
