Fernando Mechereffe, a senior on the NC State men's golf team, was selected by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) to the PING All-South Region team. Each of the nine PING all-region team are comprised of 15 golfers and all the honorees are now nominees for PING All-America honors.
Mechereffe, who hails from Pelotas, Brazil, led the Wolfpack in 7 of 12 tournaments this season and had a team-best 72.86 stroke average. He also led the team with 13 rounds at even, or under-par this season. NC State, which finished fourth at the ACC Championship, tied for tenth of 28 teams at the NCAA East Regional, beating six higher-ranked teams, including top-30 squads South Carolina, Augusta State, Wake Forest and Duke.
A two-time Brazilian Amateur champion, Mechereffe (pronounced metch-er-ref-E) was named All-ACC last month and now becomes the 29th Wolfpack men's golfer to earn all-region honors in the program's history. He finished his career ranked 11th in school history with 113 total rounds played. Mechereffe graduated last month with a degree in sports management and now looks to join a professional tour.

Another former Wolfpack golfer honored by the GCAA this week was Bowen Sargent, who is the assistant coach at Tenenssee and was named the Jan Strickland Assistant Coach of the Year. Sargent, a two-time All-America and All-ACC selection for the Wolfpack, still holds the school record for most career rounds played (150) and is one of only three former NC State golfers to have played in four NCAA Tournaments. He spent nine years playing professionally and had eight victories during his pro career. Sargent joined the Volunteer's coaching staff in July 2001.
