Austin, Texas - The 2004 Outdoor NCAA Championships continued last night at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas, with the Wolfpack competing in six different races. The finals of both the men's and women's 10,000 meters was run, as well as the prelims of the women's 100 meters and 100 meter hurdles, and both the men's and women's 3,000 meter steeplechase. The Pack's Chad Pearson earned All-American honors in the 10,000 meters, while Andy Smith advanced to the finals of the 3,000 meter steeplechase with his strong showing.
Pearson finished fifth in the 10,000 meters with his time of 29:58.13. This is the first time Pearson won All-American honors for track in his NC State career, and he becomes the first Wolfpack runner since 1998, and only the third runner of all-time to earn such accolades in the 10,000 meters. In the women's 10,000 meters, Kristin Price did not finish the race.
Andy Smith will advance to the finals of the 3,000 meter steeplechase on Saturday, as he finished third in the prelims last night with his time of 8:47.77. This is the second straight year he has advanced to the finals in that race, and Smith will look to improve upon his seventh place finish of a season ago. In the women's 3,000 meter steeplechase, Kristina Roth came away with a 16th place showing in 10:32.60, and just missed advancing by two spots.
NC State also had two female sprinters compete, although neither advanced to the finals. Ebony Foster finished 10th in the 100 meter hurdles with her time of 12.99. Felicia Fant was 15th in the 100 meters finishing in a time of 11.41.
The only NC State athlete in action on Friday will be James Rowell in the discus, which is set to begin at 3:45 p.m. Then on Saturday, Smith will compete in the finals of the 3,000 meters steeplechase, while Bobby Mack runs in the 5,000 meters and both Renee Gunning and Julia Lucas compete in the 5,000 meters for the women's side.
