
Pomeranz Leads Wolfpack In First Round

Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. - NC State shot a 28-over-par 316 in the first round of the NCAA Women's Golf East Region Championship Thursday at the Mission Inn's par-72, 6,165-yard El Campeon golf course and is tied for 14th of 21 teams. The Wolfpack is was led by senior Courtney Pomeranz, who carded a three-over 75 in the first round and is tied for 19th place.
Fellow senior Briana Vega is three strokes behind Pomeranz at six-over and is tied for 42nd. Lorraine Ballerano posted a nine-over 81, Colby Cobb is 10-over and Ashlee Dean is 12-over after the first 18 holes. All five Pack golfers birdied at least one hole and Pomeranz picked up two in a row on holes 16 and 17.
The Wolfpack tees off from the first tee 8:00 Friday morning for the second round and the tournament concludes Saturday with a final round of 18 holes. The top eight teams, plus the top two individuals not on those top eight teams, qualify for the NCAA Championships, May 18-21 in Auburn, Ala.
Duke leads the field after the first day with a two-under total of 286 and North Carolina's Meaghan Francella is the individual leader with a 69. The Wolfpack is eight strokes out of eighth place.
