Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. - NC State had some trouble putting Friday in the second round of the NCAA Women's Golf East Region Championship and ended up with a score that was one stroke higher than its first round total at the Mission Inn's par-72, 6,165-yard El Campeon course. The top eight teams and top two individuals qualify for the NCAA Championship and the Wolfpack is now in 16th place, 21 strokes behind eighth place Furman. NC State got to the greens better in the second round, but couldn't seem to get its birdie putts to fall.
Courtney Pomeranz led the team again Friday, carding a 77 to put her eight over for the tournament and in a tie for 25th. Briana Vega and Lorraine Ballerano both shot 79 in the second round, making Vega 13-over and Ballerano 16-over. Ballerano was the only one on the squad to improve from the first round, as she shaved two strokes off her Thursday total. Colby Cobb and Ashlee Dean both matched their first round scores on the second 18 holes, as Cobb is now 20-over-par and Dean is 24-over.
Pomeranz, Vega and Ballerano birdied two holes each and Dean picked up a birdie as well. NC State tees off Saturday afternoon at 12:30 in the final round.
Duke still leads the tournament at two-over-par and Meaghan Francella from North Carolina is still in front individually at four-under. Complete results and live scoring from the NCAA Regionals is available at www.ncaasports.com and www.golfstat.com.
