Five Former Wolfpack Golfers Playing In Wachovia Championship

Five former NC State golfers will be in action this weekend at the Wachovia Championship at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, May 3-9. Tim Clark, Carl Pettersson, Jeff Lankford, Kelly Mitchum and Todd Gleaton are all scheduled to tee off on Thursday. Only Wake Forest has as many (five) former golfers playing in this one event as NC State does.

Clark, the 1997 ACC Player of the Year, won two regional titles in 1996 and 1997. A three-time All-American for the Pack, he went on to win two BUY.COM tournaments after turning pro in 2000. He also captured the title at the 2002 Bell's South African Open in his hometown and finished third at the 2003 PGA Championship. One of 12 international players selected to play against the Americans in the 2003 President's Cup, Clark is ranked 54th on the PGA Tour. Clark had three top 10 finishes in 2002 and he had three more in 2003. A participant in the 2002 World Cup, where two players were selected to play from each country, Clark was chosen to play for South Africa. As of Dec. 31, 2003, Clark was ranked 62nd in earnings with $1,396,652 on the tour and 69th in the world rankings. He has earned $216.812 this year, which ranks 115th. Clark's best finish this year came at the Chrysler Classic of Tucson, where he tied for eighth.
Pettersson has enjoyed success on the professional circuits after his brief, but exceptional, career at NC State. Pettersson played two years for the Wolfpack, earning All-ACC and All-American honors in 1999 and 2000. After turning pro in 2000, Pettersson finished second at the Open de Argentina and fourth at the Gleneagles Scottish PGA Championship in 2001. Starting 2002 off with two top five finishes at the BMW Asian Open and the Omega Hong Kong Open, Pettersson finished third at the Dubai Desert Classic before winning the Algarve Open de Portugal. Tied for the lead after a four-under-par 67, he finished the 2002 British Open in 43rd. The runner-up at the 2003 Buick Invitational, Pettersson finished four shots behind Tiger Woods. Petterson had four more top-25 finishes in 2003 and was ranked 74th on the 2003 money list. A participant in the 2002 World Cup, where two players were selected to play from each country, Pettersson was chosen to play for Sweden. As of Dec. 31, 2003, Pettersson was ranked 83rd in earnings with $1,055,839 on the tour and 117th in the world rankings. Coming off a 15th place finish last week in New Orleans, Pettersson had his best finish of the season two weeks ago at the MCI Heritage, where he tied for third. So far this year, Pettersson has earned $525,063, which ranks 57th.
Mitchum, NC State's only four-time All-American, won the ACC Championship in 1991. A two-time GCAA All-Scholar, he was also a two-time GTE Academic All-American. Mitchum was a quarterfinalist at the 1992 United State Amateur and won the 1993 North-South Amateur. A 1993 Walker Cupper, Mitchum also played in two East-West All-Star matches. Mitchum played in four NCAA Championships, recording two top-20 finishes, including a tie for eighth in 1990.
