NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The NC State men's golf team opened play Thursday at the NCAA East Regional at the par 70, 6,749-yard Yale Golf Course. The Wolfpack shot 19-over-par and is tied for 14th place out of 28 teams after the first round. At the conclusion of the three-day, 54-hole tournament the top 10 teams will advance to the NCAA Championship and NC State is currently five strokes out of tenth place.
The Wolfpack was six-over at the turn, but ran into some trouble on the back nine, returning to the clubhouse with 13 extra strokes. Stephen Lewton led the team with a three-over-par first round score and was the lone wolf for the Pack to improve on the back nine, thanks in part to birdies on holes 10 and 16. Tied for 29th individually, Lewton tees off tomorrow at 8:51 a.m.
Jerry Richardson and Wesley Horne both came in five-over for the first round and both were only one-over at the turn. Horne tees off tomorrow at 8:42 a.m. and Richardson starts at 9:00 a.m. Fernando Mechereffe birdied two holes in the first round, but started the back nine with three bogeys followed by a double bogey and ended up six-over for the day. Mechereffe tees off at 9:18 tomorrow morning, right after Garry Hill's group begins at 9:09 a.m. Hill carded a 10-over score in the first round, but recorded back-to-back birdies on holes 12 and 13.
NC State looks to change its luck in the second round Friday by starting on the back nine with morning tee times from the tenth tee. At six strokes-over-par, top-ranked Florida leads the talented field, which includes 11 of the nation's top 30 teams. Kenneth Farley from Rhode Island and Wake Forest's Bill Haas are tied for first place individually at three-under.
