NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The NC State men's golf team embarks on its quest to qualify for its fourth straight trip to the NCAA Championships Thursday afternoon as the Wolfpack tees off at the first round of the NCAA East Regional at the Yale Golf Course. The top 10 teams and two individuals from the highly competitive field of 28 teams, 11 of which are ranked in the top 30, will advance to the NCAA Championships in Hot Springs, Va., June 1-4. Live scoring is available online at www.golfstat.com and www.ncaachampionships.com.
NC State, coming off a 10-under-par performance for fourth place at the ACC Championship April 18, arrived in the The First State Tuesday evening and is on the course today for its practice round. The Wolfpack will tee off from the first tee at 12:45 p.m. Thursday and will be playing with Jacksonville State and UAB.
NC State's lineup and first round tee times:
Wesley Horne 12:45
Stephen Lewton 12:54
Jerry Richardson 1:03
Garry Hill 1:12
Fernando Mechereffe 1:21
This is the Wolfpack's 14th appearance (seventh consecutive) at the NCAA Regionals, all under the direction of head coach Richard Sykes. NC State finished third at last year's NCAA Regional and advanced to the NCAA Championship (for the third straight season), where it took 15th.
The Yale Golf Course is recognized as one of the finest examples of early American golf course design. Large deeply bunkered greens and narrow rolling fairways are the core of Yale's penalizing character. In 1988, Golf Magazine ranked Yale as 71st among the 100 most difficult courses in the world. Many recognize the layout as the best collegiate course in the nation. Two of the holes- the 432-yard par-4 fourth and the 238-yard par-3 ninth - have been ranked among the 100 most difficult holes.
