FREDERICK, Md. - Mike Rogers pitched 7 2/3 strong innings, and NC State banged out 14 hits to defeat Maryland 6-3 in the first game of a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series at Harry Grove Stadium. The victory lifted the Wolfpack to 22-10 overall and evened its ACC record to 5-5. Maryland fell to 16-16 overall and 2-8 in the ACC.
Rogers (6-1) allowed two runs, all earned, on five hits. He walked two and struck out seven. Not as sharp as he was a week ago when he dominated Florida State at Tallahassee, Rogers had to pitch out of the stretch much of the game. He retired the side in order just twice, in the second and seventh innings. The two runs he allowed doubled his total of earned runs allowed on the road this season, from two to four. Adam McLaurin recorded the final three outs for his first collegiate save. Maryland starter Chris Clem (2-4) allowed six runs, four of them earned, on 12 hits in eight innings. He walked one and struck out six.
Wolfpack third baseman Eric Taylor got the scoring going with a solo home run in the top of the second inning, his second long ball of the season. The Pack added another run in the top of the fourth when Jason St. Julien rolled a one-out single to left, went all the way to third on an overthrown pickoff attempt by Clem, and scored on Bryan Kinneberg's line single to right.
NC State made it 3-0 in the top of the fifth. Clem hit Jonathan Diaz with a pitch leading off the inning, and Ryan Johnson beat out a sacrifice attempt for a single. Matt Camp, after missing a pair of bunt attempts, blooped a single to left to load the bases with none out. Lee Mezistrano grounded into a double play to drive in Diaz with the Wolfpack's third run.
The Terps broke up the shutout in the bottom of the fifth. Will Frazier led off with a double to left, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Truan Mehl's bloop single to left.
Johnson reached on a one-out infield single in the top of the seventh, went to second on an errant pickoff throw by Clem, got to third on Camp's single to center field, and scored on a groundout by Mezistrano, pushing the lead to 4-1.
The Wolfpack added two more in the top of the eighth. St. Julien singled to right to lead off, his third hit of the game. With one down, Taylor grounded a hit-and-run single to right, with St. Julien going to third on the play. Jake Muyco singled to right to drive in St. Julien and make it 5-1, and after Johnson drew a two-out walk, Clem unloaded a wild pitch to score Taylor and give the Wolfpack a 6-1 lead.
Rogers walked Mehl lead off the bottom of the eighth. With two down, Anthony Buffone greeted reliever Nate Cretarolo with his third hit of the game, a double to right-center to drive in Mehl and cut the Wolfpack lead to 6-2.
Jason Maxey led off the bottom of the ninth with an opposite-field solo homer to left, cutting the lead to 6-3.
