Wolfpack Sweeps Camels By Allowing Only One Hit in Doubleheader

BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- NC State pitched its way to a doubleheader sweep over Campbell on Thursday in Buies Creek, winning 2-1 in the first game before closing with a 2-0 shutout in the nightcap. Shaina Ervin pitched a no-hitter in her second straight start and Abbie Sims was an infield single shy of her first no-hitter as she won her sixth straight decision.
In the second game of the day, Shaina Ervin (6-8) took the mound for NC State, striking out five through three innings and nine over the course of the game. She struck out nine and walked only two, allowing only one runner to reach second base. Not only did she pitch back-to-back no-hitters, she has not allowed a ball out of the infield in both games, spanning 54 outs and 14 innings of work.
NC State loaded the bases in the first on three singles, but failed to score a run off of Camels starter Kelly Weaver (8-13). NC State would put the winning runs on the board in the fifth inning, getting a two-run homerun from Jennifer Patterson to put NC State ahead for good.
In the first game, Abbie Sims pitched a one hitter, striking out 12 and walking only two batters. The only hit was an infield single by senior leadoff hitter Meredith Moody, who hit a soft liner in front of Heather Gelbard. Sims (16-6) has now won five in a row, and fourteen of her last 16 appearances. Over her last five ball games, she is 5-0 with a 0.43 ERA, striking out 33 batters and allowing only two earned runs.
The Wolfpack offense jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning, getting a leadoff single on a hard hit ball down the rightfield line. Beth Poore came into run, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Shaina Ervin and a Sims single moved her to third. Sims would advance to second as the throw missed the cutoff and wound up at the plate. Caroline Blount singled two batters later to bring in Poore and Sims for the Wolfpack's scoring line.
Sims was hot early, striking out the first two batters and five of the first seven she faced. After four innings, Sims had 10 strikeouts, allowing a run in the third inning on a walk, an error and a passed ball.
