Last At-Bat NC State won the Hoo's Who Tournament in Charlottesville, Va. over the weekend, defeating host school and ACC rival Virginia in a 10-inning thriller in the championship game. Abbie Sims went 4-0 with a 0.55 ERA, including striking out eight in pitching all ten innings in the championship game. Another pitcher for the Pack was in the spotlight as well, as Shaina Ervin threw the school's first no hitter with a dominating performance against Binghamton.
On Deck After the Campbell and Radford doubleheaders, NC State will travel to Greensboro to play the UNCG Spartans in a doubleheader on Wednesday before jumping into conference play against North Carolina on Friday, April 9.
No-No For Shaina Freshman pitcher Shaina Ervin turned in her best pitching performance of the season when she recorded the program's first no-hitter with a win over Binghamton. Ervin struckout 12, never allowing a ball out of the infield and walking only three batters. All three batters failed to reach second base as she dominated in a 4-0 win in the Hoo's Who Tournament.
Chamberlin Pounds Pitchers Freshman Jennifer Chamberlin is smashing the ball out of the park, hitting her team leading seventh and eighth homeruns over the weekend. She hit a bomb against Seton Hall, as the ball travelled over the 10 foot high, 220 feet from home fence in right centerfield. Her second homerun was a two-run shot against Binghamton, hitting the ball to deep center. Her eight homeruns rank second in the ACC, as she is the only non-senior in the top-five in homeruns in the league. Her 17 RBIs and .555 slugging percentage lead the team, and she third in batting average (.291).
Gelbard Gets Consistent Heather Gelbard is the team leader in hits (41), average (.320) and doubles (8), and is ranked in the top-10 in the ACC in each of the three categories. What may go over looked is her defense, as she started most of the year at third before moving to second base to shore up the middle infield. In fact, since her move to second, NC State has gone 17-8 after going 3-8 in her games at third to start the season. Her fielding percentage of .965 is tops among the team's middle infielders.
Sims-Sational While freshman Shaina Ervin recorded the schools first no-hitter in the Hoo's Who Tournament, Abbie Sims was also impressive, as the duo continues to establish themselves as two of the top freshman pitchers in the conference. Sims went 4-0 with a 0.55 ERA, while hitting .368 over the weekend as well. She pitched 10 strong innings against Virginia in the championship game, striking out eight and allowing only one earned run. She improved her record to 15-6 on the season, and has won 12 of her last 14 decisions overall. Her 1.84 ERA is in the top-10 in the ACC and her 8.94 strikeouts per seven innings ration is the third highest in the conference.
Other notable marks are her strikeouts (160; fifth in the conference), shutouts (5; fifth), oppt. batting average (.212; seventh) and complete games (17; fourth).
Sister, Sister It's not double vision. It's twins. Freshmen Miranda and Shaina Ervin are twins. Miranda will wear No. 11, while Shaina wears No. 12. Miranda catches for Shaina. In college, the duo have lived up to their prep credentials, as Miranda is currently second on the team in batting average (.294), second in hits (32), second in RBIs (14), and tied for second in homeruns (2), and doubles (5). She is also a strong catcher, with a fielding percentage of .993 and has thrown out seven runners attempting to steal. Miranda is also on a 10-game hit streak, the longest streak for any NC State player this season.
Shaina has been solid on the mound, winning five games and posting a 2.22 ERA and the school's first no hitter. She ranks in the top-10 in several categories, including strikeouts, average, and opponents batting average. She also has been consistent and clutch at the plate, leading the team in RBIs and walks, and she is tied for second in homeruns with two.
Softball Home Games at Walnut Creek NC State will play all of its home games at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex for the 2004 season. The Wolfpack will host Radford in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 3 in the next home game for the Wolfpack.
