RALEIGH, N.C. - Abbie Sims won her fourth straight outing with a five hit, five strikeout performance as NC State downed tournament host Winthrop on its home field, 4-2. NC State (7-11) scored three runs in the second inning against Kelly Johnson (6-4), as the Eagles fell to 13-10-1 in the opening game for both teams in the Winthrop Ringor Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C.
Sims (6-4) won her fourth straight game, scattering five hits, all singles, while striking out five and allowing just two runs. During her four game win streak, Sims' ERA is 0.75 and she has struck out 41 batters to eight walks while allowing only three runs in 28 innings.
"We played a well rounded game today and got contributions from many different players today," head coach Lisa Navas remarked. "We hit the ball well and scored runs, this was a great team effort."
The Eagles jumped on the board in the bottom of the first, as Janiva Willis drew a walk, and advanced on a sacrifice bunt Katie Kipisz and a wild pitch from Sims. She would score from third on a Lindsey Merriman fielder's choice.
NC State responded in the top of the second, scoring three runs off of Johnson on a RBI single from Lee Hasper and a two RBI single by Heather Gelbard, who leads the teams in RBIs with 10 on the year. Jen Chamberlin led off the inning by drawing a walk, and Moffatt Steele came in to run. Steele advanced to second when Shaina Ervin reached on an error by the first baseman. Hasper hit a single up the middle to score Steele, and Ervin was replaced by Beth Poore at second as a pinch runner. After Jennifer Patterson struckout, Blount flied to deep left field and Heather Jedrey singled up the middle. That brought up the Wolfpack's leadoff hitter, Gelbard. She roped a single into deep centerfield, scoring Poore and Jedrey for a 3-1 Wolfpack lead, a lead it would not relinquish.
Jedrey lead off the fifth with a walk, and Gelbard picked up her third RBI of the day on a double to right centerfield to push the NC State lead to 4-1. Winthrop would add a run in the bottom half of the inning for the final margin.
NC State will play Furman tonight at 8 pm and will play Ohio State and Eastern Illinois on Saturday.
