PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. - The NC State men's golf team shaved 20 strokes off its first round total in the second round of the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship Monday at Sawgrass Country Club (par 72) in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. Unfortunately, the Wolfpack wasn't the only squad to sharpen its play in day two of the 18-team tournament, as NC State remains tied for 10th going into the third and final round tomorrow.
Stephen Lewton improved his first round score by 11 strokes to shoot even par in the second round to lead the Pack along with Fernando Mechereffe, who also shot par. Lewton eagled hole 11 and birdied four others, while Mechereffe knocked in four birdies as well. Jerry Richardson trimmed three strokes off his first round score to finish four over today and Garry Hill, who posted three birdies on the day, improved by six shots to card a 75.
Mechereffe, who is now three over for the tournament, has moved into a tie for 14th place overall.
South Carolina remains in first place, with a 13-stroke lead on second place Clemson. The tournament's challenging field includes 14 top-50 teams, nine of which are ranked in the top-25.
