Blacksburg, Va. - The NC State track and field team got in one final meet before next weekend's Indoor ACC Championships, by competing in the Virginia Tech Challenge this past weekend. Mitchell Pope won the shot put for the men's team, while two distance runners brought home top-five finshes in the 3,000 meters.
Freshman Wesley Smith brought home a second place finish in the 3,000 meters with his time of 8:23.21, while his brother Andy took fifth in that same race (8:29.02). John Henderson also ran that race, placing 22nd (8:55.96). TJ Giwa was 15th (7.06) in the finals and Monterrio Adams was 15th (6.95) in the prelims of the 60 meters. Giwa also finished eighth in the 200 meter running a 21.81, while Adams was seventh in the 400 meters with a 48.79. In the mile it was Matt Kassouf in 20th (4:23.85).
Mitchell Pope brought home a first place finish in the shot put with a heave of 15.92 meters. James Rowell placed fifth in the weight throw (18.33m). In the triple jump, Michael Hill was fifth with a mark of 14.51 meters.
The women's team had a strong day in the 3,000 meters, recording two NCAA Provisional times as well as placing six runners in the top-eight. Kristin Price won the 3,000 meters in 9:29.97, while Renee Gunning was close behind in second (9:31.04). Both Price and Gunning notched NCAA Provisional times. Also in the top-10 in that race, Lucinda Hull was fifth (9:53.26), Josianna Lauber was sixth (9:57.67), Erin Swain was seventh (9:57.73), and Claudin Hull took eighth (10:01.49). Rounding out the NC State runners in the 3,000 meters were Amy Arnold in 13th (10:11.23), Michelle Popple in 16th (10:15.82), Kristina Roth in 19th (10:22.23), and Ginger Wheeler in 21st (10:31.50).
NC State had five of the top-10 finishers in the 60 meters. Felicia Fant finished third on the day running a 9.47. Ebony Foster saw her first action of the indoor season, and placed sixth running a 7.61. Joya Rodgers was seventh (7.68), Courtney Patterson placed eighth (7.95), and Nasheena Quick was 10th in the semis (7.64). Foster also had a strong showing in the 60 hurdles, breaking her own school record and notching a NCAA Provisional time with a first place showing (8.28). Patterson also finished 20th in the 200 meters (25.32), while Rodgers was 43rd (26.05). Julia Lucas came away with a top finish in the mile, as she placed third running a 4:53.27. Also in that race, Janelle Vadnais was 14th (5:08.72), Jennifer Boyd was 17th (5:11.36), and Leslie Jimison was 18th (5:13.63). Georgia Davis ran the 800 meters in 2:20.17 for 17th place.
Teresa Reed was third in the high jump, matching her season-best mark of 11'07.75". In the high jump, both Joann Jackson and Laila Thomas cleared 5'04.75" to tie for 10th place. Thomas also took sixth in the long jump (5.45m). Kelly Smoke finished fourth in the weight throw (18.33m) and ninth in the shot put (14.22m). Brie Ward also was 12th in the weight throw (14.24m).
