Wolfpack Men's and Women's Swimming Strong as Cullen Jones Sets Record Junior sprinter sets GTAC pool record in 50 freestyle.
NC State junior sprinter Cullen Jones set a Georgia Tech Aquatics Center record, twice, at the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta, Ga., Friday, Nov. 19. Jones swam a 50 free in 20.07 in the prelims to set the mark, and then broke that again in the finals heat with a winning time of 20.05 as the men cruised to a second place standing in the meet with 263 points. The women are fourth after the first day with 175.50 points, with diver Molly Culberson finishing second in the 3-meter competition to pace the women.
Jones' time was the second fastest in the conference this season, and was close to his personal best in the event. Jones swam a 19.70 at the ACC Championship in 2004 to win the 50 free title.
Culberson again finished near the top in a diving events, as the junior paced the Wolfpack in top-5 finishes last season and early in the 2004-05 campaign as well. Her score of 467.75 was good for second place.
The men's 400 medley relay team continued to impress in the water, as the quartet of Kevin Velleca, Rob Yeager, Kevin Devine and Jones broke the GTAC record for the event with a 3:21.05, the fastest time on the year for NC State and one of the top times in the conference.
