Wolfpack Men Down Blue Devils

The men's swimming and diving team defeated Duke on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 30 in Raleigh to improve to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the ACC. NC State was dominant in the relay events, and won nine events to defeat Duke 136-101. Freshman Chris Schenck made his debut in the 1000 freestyle against Duke, swimming a 9:34.85, the sixth fastest time in the ACC this season and the fastest time for the Wolfpack.
The night started strong as the Wolfpack won the 400 medley relay and its `B' team took third. Kevin Velleca, Rick Scott, Cullen Jones and Scott Dettloff turned in the second fastest time in the event in the ACC, and it was just two seconds off of its own ACC leading time. The NC State relay team would close out the night in the 400 freestyle relay, taking first and second place. The winning team of John Hudson, Dan Glauber, Kevin Devine and Dettloff swam the third fastest time in the conference with a 3:08.66. The second place squad consisted of Andy Bauman, Schenck, Rob Yeager and Velleca with a time of 3:10.08.
In the 50 freestyle, Kevin Velleca improved on his season time in winning the event against Duke, posting the second fastest time for the Wolfpack and the seventh fastest overall in the ACC.
Lyle Babcock won the 200 butterfly, posting another time in the top-10 of the conference and his second fastest on the season with a 1:54.42.
Kevin Barkley posted the sixth fastest time in the conference, and the best on the team with a 1:53.92. Peter Pessagno narrowly missed the top-10 in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:42.91.
In the 100 freestyle, Scott Dettloff posted a 47.84 to take first as NC State rolled.
TJ Ferguson had his best showing ever as a diver at NC State, posting an impressive 307.20 to take first in the 1-meter diving competition. His mark was the first score above 300 in the ACC this season, and it is the top mark by more than 19 points.
The men return to the water when they host Georgia Tech on Nov. 5.
