DURHAM, N.C. - Junior outside hitter Sarah Salem recorded 15 kills to lead Duke past the NC State volleyball team, 3-0 (30-15, 30-19, 30-14), Saturday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Wolfpack now falls to 10-16 overall, 0-12 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while the Blue Devils improve to 16-8, 7-5 in conference play.
Game one opened with a 5-1 run from the Blue Devils, but NC State pulled the game to a 6-6 tie. Duke would then go on a 12-5 run and went on to win 30-15. The Pack didn't go away, however, as NC State battled back in the second contest, turning it into a seesaw battle that eventually saw both teams all knotted up at 15 a piece. In the end though, it was the Blue Devils emerging as the winner, 30-19.
More of the same followed in game three, as Duke opened the contest on a 14-3 run. The Wolfpack would manage to come back, but couldn't overcome a nine-point deficit, giving the Blue Devils enough time to come away with the 30-14 win.
NC State was led by junior middle blocker Stefani Eddins, who finished the night with a team-high eight kills to go with 16 digs and two block assists. Fellow middle blocker Adeola Kosoko added four kills, while freshman libero Andrea Bentley picked up 12 digs. Setters Lauren Markowski and Melissa Rabe totaled 18 and six assists respectively.
In addition to the play of Salem, sophomore outside hitter Tealle Hunkus and freshman middle blocker Carrie DeMange each tallied 14 kills to help power the Blue Devil attack. Defensively, senior Stephanie Istvan anchored the backcourt with 19 digs.
The Wolfpack will next play rival North Carolina in Chapel Hill on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
