CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The NC State volleyball team fell on the road to Atlantic Coast Conference foe North Carolina, 3-0 (30-20, 30-17, 30-18) Tuesday night at Carmichael Auditorium. With the loss the Wolfpack drops to 10-17 overall, 0-13 in the ACC, while the Tar Heels improve to 16-11, 9-4 in conference play.
North Carolina jumped out to an 10-3 run to start off game one, but NC State managed to pull within seven at 16-9. The deficit, however, turned out to be too much, as the Tar Heels held on to their lead and won, 30-20. The two teams came out strong to begin the second contest, but UNC used an 8-2 run to take a 15-7 lead. The Tar Heels would go on to lead by as much as 14 before putting away the game, 30-17. More of the same followed in the third game, as both teams found themselves knotted up at 9-9. But then North Carolina found a way to separate itself from the Pack once again, due in part to an 11-4 run that later saw the Heels close the door on the match, 30-18.
Leading the way for the Wolfpack was junior middle blocker Stefani Eddins, who finished with a team-best 13 kills off a .233 hitting percentage. She also added two blocks to move her season block total to 148, just two away from tying the school record of 150 in a single season. Senior outside hitter Melanie Rowe and junior middle blocker Adeola Kosoko also finished with nine and eight kills respectively, while freshman libero Andrea Bentley finished with nine digs. Sophomore setter Melissa Rabe dished out 32 assists for NC State on the night.
Senior middle hitter Katie Wright and senior outside hitter Molly Pyles both came up strong for North Carolina, finishing with 17 kills and 15 kills respectively. Senior defensive specialist Caroline deRoeck meanwhile added 16 digs defensively to move to third on the all-time Carolina single-season dig list.
The Wolfpack will return to action on Friday night when it plays at Virginia Tech. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
