Chapel Hill, N.C. - The NC State men's soccer team fell to North Carolina, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at UNC's Fetzer Field. The Tar Heels (7-6-2, 3-2 ACC) used two first half goals to overcome a Wolfpack (6-6-1, 1-4-1 ACC) offense that produced some good scoring chances, especially in the first half. Today's game was the first in a four-game road trip for NC State.
UNC got the first score of the contest in the eighth minute. After a NC State foul, the Tar Heels had a free kick from about 30 yards out. Andrew Rhea chipped the free kick into the NC State penalty box, and Tim Merritt got past the Pack defense to one-time it into the net to give UNC an early 1-0 lead.
North Carolina would add a second goal right before half time to go up 2-0 in the 43rd. Rhea struck once again as his shot from 28 yards out was saved by NC State's Jorge Gonzalez. But UNC's Corey Ash got the rebound and slid it into the Wolfpack net for his sixth goal of the season.
NC State had plenty of chances to score in the first half, outshooting UNC 10-6 and taking seven corner kicks. Junior Bryant Salter had the first opportunity in the sixth minute as he went up for a header on the back post and collided with UNC goalie Ford Williams. The ball would roll into the next, but Salter was called for the foul and the goal did not count. Freshman El Hadj Cisse would come close in the 23rd minute, as his shot was saved by Williams and then hit the crossbar. Sophomore Santiago Fusilier also had a strong chance in the 38th minute, but his shot from 30 yards out was punched over the crossbar by Williams.
The second half was more of a defensive battle with much of the play in the midfield. The Wolfpack had a span of four corner kicks in a minute, resulting in a shot by freshman Ernesto Di Laudo that just went wide right of the Tar Heel net with 30 minutes to go.
Williams recorded the shut out for UNC in goal with his five saves, while Gonzalez also recorded five saves for NC State
NC State will continue its four-match road swing with a trip to Charlotte on Wednesday.
