NC State's Attack Comes Up Short

CARY, N.C. - NC State women's soccer fell 2-0 to No.23 Wake Forest. NC State dropped to 7-7-2, 1-7-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, while Wake Forest improved to 10-5-1, 4-4-0. With a 14-10 shot advantage the Wolfpack didn't manage a goal, while Wake Forest scored off of two corner kick serves. NC State will play its final regular season match on the road in Charlottesville for a 5 p.m. game time against No.4 Virginia on Wednesday, Oct. 27.
NC State carried over its A-game from the previous home match versus Florida State. Despite a 1-0 defecit at the half, the Wolfpack held possession for a majority of the first period. NC State recorded four shots, including a header from senior Erin Griswold in the keeper box midway through the period. WFU's goalkeeper, Heather Currie, stopped the lone shot on goal. The Pack also had a couple of missed chances after well-served balls from sophomore Carol Tognetti and one from senior Anna Helenius on a corner kick opportunity. Wake Forest scored the game's first goal at 18:43 on a nearside corner kick by Jayme Leigh Cargoni. She sent the ball to the feet of Sarah Kozey who was waiting just outside the left top corner. Kozey one-touched into the corner. NC State's keeper Megan Connors had two saves.
Once again the Pack came out ahead of the Deacs, outshooting them by a margin of 10-to-5 in the second 45 minutes. But once again, it was Wake Forest that recorded a goal. Elizabeth Remy netted her sixth goal of the year after Liegh Cargoni served in from the farside corner to Tara Caldwell. Caldwell turned to shoot and was blocked, but Remy then sent it past Connors into the bottom left corner at 55:28. Three of the Wolfpack's shots were on goal, including one each from junior Lydia McBath, sophomore Mandela Schumacher-Hodge and freshman Alex Caram. McBath excited the crowd with her strike, forcing Currie to layout to make the save. For NC State Connors made a spectacular save midway through the half. Wake Forest forced a ball through from 22 yards out on the left side that sped up quickly as it reached the frame. Connors carried the ball over the crossbar for the save. The New Jersey sophomore had six saves in the match. Currie saw three times as much action in her second period of play, by making three saves. She had four total.
"Our team played with a lot of heart and determination tonight," said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. "We outplayed Wake Forest, we outshot them, but we just didn't finish at the net. I am proud of this team."
