The NC State volleyball team came up short Saturday night, losing to Atlantic Coast Conference foe Virginia, 3-1 at Reynolds Coliseum. The Wolfpack lost by the scores of 18-30, 36-34, 17-30 and 22-30, dropping them to 10-6 overall, 0-3 in the conference. Meanwhile, the Cavaliers improved to 12-4 overall, 2-2 in the ACC.
Virginia came out strong to start the match, jumping to an early lead and never looking back for a 30-18 win. But the Pack would find its composure in the second game, building a two-point lead, 23-21. The Cavaliers came back and made a see-saw battle out of it, but in the end it was NC State that prevailed, 36-34. Virginia again took an early lead in game three, due in part to an 8-2 run out of the gates. A little later, the Cavaliers closed the door with an 8-4 run at the end. State would make a game out of the fourth contest, grabbing a 12-10 lead, but that would be all for the Pack, as Virginia went on a 9-0 run to go up 19-12, and never looked back, taking the match with a 30-22 win.
Leading NC State was senior Melanie Rowe, who finished with a team-best 16 kills to go with 12 digs. Junior middle blocker Adeola Kosoko racked up 13 kills off a .323 attack percentage, while fellow junior middle blocker Stefani Eddins added 10 kills and seven total blocks for the Wolfpack. Setters Lauren Markowski and Melissa Rabe shared time and combined for 46 assists. As a team, NC State racked up 14.5 total team blocks to the seven by Virginia.
Meanwhile, freshman outside hitter Sarah Kirkwood led the Cavaliers with a match-high 23 kills off a .288 attack percentage. Senior middle Alexis Geocaris and sophomore outside hitter Lindsay Osco also came up big for Virginia, finishing with 18 and 19 kills respectively. Freshman libero Melissa Caldwell racked up 23 digs defensively, while sophomore setter Emily Kirkwood dished out 60 assists on the night.
The Pack will take on Maryland on Sunday, October 3rd at 2:00 p.m.
