Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State men's soccer team shut out No. 6 Duke, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Method Road Soccer Stadium. The win was the Pack's (6-5-1, 1-3-1 ACC) first of the ACC season, with every ACC game the Pack has played in a one-goal contest, including the Pack losing two of those in overtime. Junior Aaron King scored his team leading seventh goal of the season less then two minutes remaining to down the visiting Devils (12-2, 3-2 ACC), for only their second loss of the season.
The lone goal of the game would come at the 88:03 mark. Freshman Hugh Cronin collected a loose ball in the midfield and sent the ball to King who was on the right wing. King controlled the ball, and beat two Blue Devil defenders into the penalty box. King then slipped the ball into the lower left corner of the net for the game-winner. The goal was King's seventh of the season, and his second game-winner this season.
Both squads did slide a shot past the goalkeepers, but a defender from each team was on the goal line for the back save. Only three minutes into the contest, NC State's Bryant Salter beat the Duke defense and fired a shot onto goal, only to have a Duke defender get his foot on it to save the goal. Duke had their best chance in the 74th minute, when Paul Dudley saw an open net only to have NC State's Justin Branch step in the way and block the shot.
NC State also had an excellent chance with under 10 minutes to go. Junior Federico Peria had two shots on the Duke net less then five seconds apart, but both were saved by Duke's Justin Trowbridge.
Both teams recorded 10 shots, and each squad had six shots on goals. NC State's Jorge Gonzalez recorded his third shutout of the season with five saves. Duke's Trowbridge finished with four saves on the day.
The contest was the second top-10 victory NC State has had against an ACC school over the past two seasons. The Pack downed No. 7 Virginia 1-0 last year at Method Road. Also, NC State tied No. 2 Maryland 1-1 earlier this season at home.
NC State will not play at home again until November 6 against Virginia Tech, the Pack's final regular season home contest.
