CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- The NC State volleyball team suffered another Atlantic Coast Conference loss Friday night, this time to the hands of the Miami Hurricanes, who beat the Wolfpack, 3-0 (30-21, 30-27, 30-24) at the Knight Sports Complex. The loss drops the Pack to .500 overall at 10-10, while 0-7 in conference play. The Hurricanes are now 9-6 overall and improved to 4-3 in ACC play.
The Hurricanes jumped out to a 10-3 lead early on in game one. The Wolfpack rallied for four points after that, but couldn't get past Miami, who took the 30-21 win after a kill by senior outside hitter Ashley Youngs. The beginning of the second contest saw much of the same as the Hurricanes jumped to a 18-9 lead. NC State capitalized on five Miami errors to bring the score to 28-24 and later picked up four more points before junior outside hitter Karla Johnson connected on a kill that ended the rally and put the game away, 30-27.
A fired-up NC State squad took the court again in game three, and this time took an early 10-8 lead. The Hurricanes, however, tied the score at 11-all and took the lead after one of eight Wolfpack errors. Miami rallied with an eight-point run to bring the score to 16-12, and never looked back, taking the game 30-24.
The Wolfpack was led by junior middle blockers Stefani Eddins and Adeola Kosoko who tallied a team-high six kills apiece. Meanwhile, seven NC State players posted blocks in the match, helping the Pack to 11 total team blocks overall. Freshman libero Andrea Bentley also stepped up defensively, picking up 10 digs, while setters Lauren Markowski and Melissa Rabe dished out 17 and 12 assists respectively.
Youngs led Miami with a match-high 12 kills in 25 attempts to go along with six digs. Also recording double-digit kills was Johnson, who hit 10 kills and posted her first two solo blocks of the season. Fellow senior outside hitter Valeria Tipiana was 9-for-20 for a .400 hitting percentage while redshirt sophomore middle blocker Francheska Savage tallied eight kills. Sophomore setter Jill Robinson led all players with 42 assists. Senior libero Jamie Grass registered a match-high 11 digs.
The Wolfpack will next travel to Florida State for a 1 p.m. match on Sunday afternoon.
