Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State men's soccer team shutout visiting Stony Brook 4-0, Wednesday afternoon at SAS Soccer Park. The Wolfpack (5-5-1) scored once in the first half, then added three goals in the second frame for the non-conference win. The Seawolves (8-3-1) were limited to just six shots, with only two on net. NC State next faces No. 6 Duke this Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Method Road.
After a scoreless first 30 minutes of action, NC State got its first goal of the game. Sophomore Santiago Fusilier started the play by collecting the ball in the midfield and finding junior Bryant Salter on the wing. Salter quickly turned inside and fed the ball back to Fusilier who one-timed it into the Seawolves net. The goal, which proved to be the game winner, was Fusilier's first of the season.
After being up just 1-0 at the half, NC State came out strong in the second half and put three more shots into the Stony Brook net to secure the win. Junior Aaron King struck first in the 65th minute. King collected the ball at the 50-yard line, and dribbled all the way down the right wing beating two Stony Brook defenders and scored on a breakaway. Sophomore Chris Wheaton scored NC State's next goal in the 71st minute. Junior John Queeley fed Salter on the wing, Salter then crossed it into the box, and Wheaton headed in his fourth goal of the year. NC State's last goal was King's second of the contest. Freshman Hugh Cronin fed King who scored his sixth goal of the season in the 78th minute.
NC State ended the game outshooting Stony Brook 17-6, and had a 12-2 advantage on shots on goal. Aaron Sanders got his second straight start in the Wolfpack goal, and recorded two saves for his first shutout at NC State. Stony Brook's E.J. Xikis made eight saves on the day, with seven of those in the first half.
The Wolfpack will return to action Sunday afternoon and take on No. 6 Duke at 2:00 p.m. at Method Road.
