RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State won the first nine bouts of the match, including four pins, a technical fall and a major decision, and cruised to a 42-3 victory over Campbell in college wrestling action Wednesday night at Reynolds Coliseum. The Wolfpack improved to 5-2 in dual matches for the season, while the Camels fell to 0-6.
The 42 points marked the most by an NC State team since a 44-3 victory over The Citadel in 2000-01. The Camels' victory in the final match of the evening prevented the Wolfpack from recording its first shutout since a 48-0 blanking of Delaware State, also 2000-01.
NC State's Jeremy Hartrum (9-4) used two takedowns and a reversal to score a 7-4 decision over Campbell's Andy Bricker (9-4) at 125 pounds in the first bout of the evening. The Wolfpack then made it 9-0 in the team scoring when 133-pounder Dan Pacitti (9-6) recorded a first-period pin of the Camels' Jordan Henning (4-8) at the 1:25 mark.
At 141, NC State's Alex Hernandez (12-6) parlayed five takedowns and a three-point near fall into a 17-6 major decision over Adam Bricker (7-8), and Jake Giamoni (10-4) got three takedowns and five near falls to record a 21-3 technical fall over Elliot Berger (1-9) at 149 to give the Wolfpack an 18-0 lead in the team scoring after four bouts.
Eric Heath (2-5) wrestling for the injured Scott Garren at 157, kept the shutout alive for the Pack by pinning Jeff Lyons (3-10) at the 4:51 mark. That gave NC State a 24-0 lead in the team scoring, and 165-pounder Dustin Kawa clinched the team victory with a pin of Campbell freshman Joshua Kalafchi at 3:53. That made it 30-0 with just four bouts remaining.
At 174, Wolfpack freshman Rick Brownlee, a Cary, N.C., native, got his first collegiate victory with a pin of Brian Hocum at 3:45, giving NC State a 36-0 advantage in the team scoring.
In the best and most exciting match of the evening, NC State's Daniel Humphries (10-8) got a reversal and a near fall in the final 20 seconds of the bout to overcome a 5-2 deficit and hand Lantz Nixon a 7-5 defeat at 184. Zach Garren just missed a major decision at 197 when Mark Averell got a takedown in the final seconds, but Garren did come away with an 8-2 win that increased the Wolfpack's team lead to 42-0.
Campbell finally got on the scoreboard with a sudden-death 5-3 decision by heavyweight Dennis Campbell (8-6) over the Wolfpack's Jainor Palma (6-10).
NC State will return to action on Wednesday, January 27 against Old Dominion at Reynolds Coliseum. The match will begin at 7:30 p.m.
