CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Jake Giamoni, Scott Garren and Dustin Kawa, the senior leaders in the heart of the NC State lineup, each won decisively in their respective weight classes, and NC State took an easy 25-12 victory over arch-rival North Carolina on Wednesday night in Chapel Hill.
The win over UNC marked the 350th dual-match victory for Wolfpack Bob Guzzo, who is in his 30th season as head coach. Guzzo got the milestone in one of his teams' most impressive performances ever against North Carolina. Only four Guzzo-coached Wolfpack teams have scored more than 25 points in a dual match against UNC, with the 1982 team setting the standard with a 32-11 victory over the Heels in Chapel Hill.
The bout was the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for each team, with the Wolfpack improving to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference. The Tar Heels fell to 1-3 and 0-1. The Wolfpack won one bout by forfeit, and Kawa got his team-high sixth pin of the season in his match, accounting for 12 of the 13-point differential.
North Carolina won the first two matches of the evening, and then, trailing 25-6, won the last two. UNC's Venroy July (14-11) opened the match with a 4-2 decision over Zach Garren (5-9) that took four overtimes to decide. Both wrestlers were penalized a point for stalling in the overtime periods, and July finally won the match with a takedown in the sudden-death period.
Tar Heel heavyweight Ryan Adam (17-9) gave the Heels a 6-0 team lead with an 8-3 win over the Wolfpack's Jainor Palma (5-9), but NC State turned the momentum in the 125-pound bout as Jeremy Hartrum (6-4) took his second decision of the season over Drew Forshey (7-6), a 7-5 win in sudden-death overtime. Dan Pacitti (7-6) managed a 6-2 decision over Bobby Shaw (10-14) that tied the team score at 6-6.
NC State's Alex Hernandez got the easiest win of the night when North Carolina forfeited at 141, giving the Wolfpack a 12-6 team lead. That brought up the senior trio of Giamoni, Garren and Kawa, and they put the match away with three easy victories.
After a scoreless first period, Giamoni (8-4) went to work on UNC's Andy Slack (6-12) and wound up with an 11-5 decision at 149. Garren (9-2) then took an 11-3 major decision over Ashton Buswell (8-14) at 157, and Kawa (9-2) pinned Garrett Atkinson at the 5:39 mark of the 165 match. That was the clincher, giving NC State a 25-6 lead with two bouts remaining.
Josh Lee (5-12) rallied for a 6-4 victory over NC State's Rick Brownlee (0-3) at 174, and Mark Canty (14-12) avenged an earlier pin by Daniel Humphries (8-8) with a 7-4 decision at 184 to conclude the bout.
NC State will return to action against Maryland on Saturday, January 17, at Reynolds Coliseum.
