Men's Soccer Falls to #19 UC Santa Barbara

Durham, N.C. - The NC State men's soccer dropped its first game of the 2003 season to #19 UC Santa Barbara, 4-0, Friday afternoon in the first game of the Duke Adidas Tournament being hosted by Duke this weekend. Drew McAthy scored three goals for the Gauchos (1-0-1), while the Wolfpack (1-1) were shutout.
UCSB's Drew McAthy scored his first goal of the day in the 29th minute. McAthy received a pass from Neil Jones and beat Wolfpack keeper Jorge Gonzalez with a shot in the upper right corner. The Wolfpack's best scoring chance of the half was by freshman Santiago Fusilier who just missed his first goal of the season with a long shot in the 30th minute. NC State was down 1-0 at the half.
McAthy struck once again just seven minutes into the second half, and added his third goal of the game in the 72nd minute. UCSB would also add a penalty kick by Memo Arzate at the 81:29 mark. The Wolfpack just missed a goal in the 55th minute after junior Martin Cini broke away from the defense but was unabl to dribble past UCSB keeper Dan Kennedy.
NC State's Gonzalez finished with seven saves on the day, as NC State was outshot 19-5.
The Wolfpack will conclude action at the Duke Adidas Tournament Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. against William & Mary.
