Raleigh, N.C. - For the third consecutive game, and the second straight ACC contest, the NC State men's soccer team registered a shutout victory. This time it was the strong play of the Wolfpack defense that led NC State (5-4, 2-1 ACC) to the 1-0 upset win over No. 7 Virginia (4-5, 2-1 ACC) Sunday afternoon at Method Road. Sophomore Aaron King scored the lone goal for the Pack in the 36th minute, his ACC leading seventh goal of the season and his third game-winner for the Pack. With today's win, the Wolfpack has won two srtaight ACC games over ranked teams (No. 24 Clemson 2-0 last weekend), and in the process has shutout both opponents.
The lone goal of the game would come at the 35:01 mark. King played a quick one-two with freshman Santiago Fusilier just outside the UVA penalty box. King then took Fusilier's pass straight to goal and netted the game-winner with a hard shot from the left corner. NC State went into the half with the 1-0 lead, and outshot the Cavs 6-4 in that first half.
Virginia controlled the flow of the game in the second half, outshooting NC Statre 10-2 in the half. The Cavalier's best chance came when Matt Oliver took a cross and his shot hit the crossbar with only three minutes left.
NC State keeper Jorge Gonzalez recorded his third straight shutout in the Wolfpack nets, as he finished with four saves on the day. Virginia's Ryan Burke finished with three saves.
NC State will conclude its five-game homestand this Wednesday, when the Pack faces Howard at 2:00 p.m.
