Wolfpack Volleyball Completes Birmingham-Southern Challenge With Win

Birmingham, Ala. - Freshman outside hitter Julia Reis finished with a new career-high 24 kills, and juniors Melanie Rowe and Maya Mapp, who earned all-tournament honors, added 14 and 13 kills respectively to see the NC State volleyball teamon to a 3-2 victory over Troy State during the second day of action at the Birmingham-Southern Challenge. With the win, the Wolfpack moves to 6-7 overall, while the loss dropped the Trojans to 6-4.
Troy State took an early 2-0 lead in the match after winning game one by the score of 30-22 and then game two, 32-30. But NC State wouldn't let that worry them, as they rallied back to take the next three games by the scores of 30-26, 30-26 and 15-13.
On the match, Reis also stepped up defensively for the Wolfpack, tallying 21 digs and a block assist. Also playing strong defense for NC State was senior libero Caroline Frede, who finished with 21 digs as well. Senior setter Crystal Shannon went onto dish out 62 assists on the morning. The Trojans were led by senior middle blocker Rachel Hassan and senior outside hitter Haven Triboulet. Hassan finished with a team-best 23 kills to go with 15 digs, while Triboulet tacked on another 21 kills and 18 digs of her own.
Mapp was the only NC State player named to the 10-member all-tournament team, which also included Rachel Hassan of Troy State, Lacey Stejskal of South Alabama, Danielle Graff of Birmingham Southern, Heather Watts of Memphis, Tiara Gilkey of Memphis, Cassie Reed of Birmingham Southern, Andrea Duke of Wofford, Nancy Nellans of Memphis, and Sarah Martin of Birmingham Southern.
The Wolfpack now heads back home to Reynolds Coliseum to face No. 5 Georgia Tech on Tuesday night. Match time is set at 7 p.m.
