Alexandra Preiss, Lauren Sauer and Lynette Moster combined for 39 kills as fifth-ranked Georgia Tech opened the Atlantic Coast Conference volleyball season with a three-game sweep of NC State tonight at Reynolds Coliseum. The undefeated Yellow Jackets, who won for the 12th time in as many matches overall, won by scores of 30-14, 30-18 and 30-27. Tech is 1-0 in ACC play and 12-0 overall. The Wolfpack fell to 6-8 overall, 0-1 in the ACC.
An enthusiastic crowd of 443 watched as one of college volleyball's best teams easily handled the Wolfpack in the first two games. The Yellow Jackets overwhelmed NC State with their offense, hitting for .353 as a team in game one and .400 in game two to go into the break up 2-0. But the Wolfpack would settle down in what would be the last game of the night, leading most of the game, only to lose by three in the end.
Leading the way for NC State was freshman outside hitter Julia Reis, who finished the night with a team-high nine kills and 11 digs. Junior middle blocker Maya Mapp and sophomore outside hitter Adeola Kosoko each added seven kills, while senior setter Crystal Shannon served out 29 assists to go with eight digs.
Preiss finished with a match-high 14 kills, while Sauer added 13 and Moster tacked on 12 more. Defensive specialist Keight Vincent and libero Marisa Aston led Tech's defense, combining for 21 digs. Setters Kele Eveland and Abby Showers finished with 36 and 13 assists respectively.
The Wolfpack will remain at home and have the rest of the week to prepare for two matches this weekend. The Florida State Seminoles make the trip to Raleigh on Friday night, while NC State will face off against the Clemson Tigers on Saturday night. Both matches are set for 7 p.m. start times.
