
NC State Gymnastics Finishes Sixth at NCAA Regionals

Athens, Ga. - The No. 24 NC State gymnastics team scored a 193.575 and finished sixth at the 2003 Southeast Regionals hosted by Georgia Saturday night. NC State's team score was the third highest for a Wolfpack squad in the NCAA Regionals. No. 4 Georgia won the meet with a 197.125 and No. 9 Florida took second with a 194.950, both teams advancing to the NCAA Championships. North Carolina finished third (194.900), Maryland placed fourth (193.825), and No. 16 Ohio State was fifth (193.650).
The Wolfpack started the meet out on beam and scored a 48.900, with each gymnast scoring at least a 9.7 and counting no falls. Senior Cara Dougherty was the Pack's top scorer as she turned in a score of 9.85 to finish in eighth place. Sophomore Cori Goldstein was close behind with a 9.8 to place 15th. Freshman Kylah Bachman scored a 9.775 for 18th place. Sophomore Kelley Kello (9.75) and senior Marlyn Madey (9.725) closed out the scoring for NC State. After all teams completed one rotation NC State stood in second place only behind Georgia's 49.150 on floor.
After its first bye, NC State competed on floor and recorded a team score of 48.600. Sabo was once again the Wolfpack's top finisher on floor, scoring a 9.85 to place fourth. Madey scored a 9.725 and was 25th. A trio of Wolfpack gymnasts completed the scoring all receiving a 9.675; Kello, senior Adina Stock, and junior Alison Bundy. After all the teams completed two events, NC State was still in second behind only Georgia.
Right after floor, NC State moved over to the vault and put together a team score of 48.350. Junior Molly Pennington led the way for NC State scoring a 9.775 and placing ninth. Sabo scored a 9.725 for 20th, and junior Cheryl Potacco was 25th with her 9.7. Other scorers for NC State were Stock (9.6) and Bachman (9.55). With only one event remaining, NC State was winning a close battle with Florida for third place (145.800-145.750) behind Georgia and North Carolina.
After the final bye, NC State concluded the meet on bars and posted a team score of 47.725, having to count one fall. Stock started the Pack off with its highest score on bars, a 9.7 for 13th place. Kello and senior Stephanie Southard each scored a 9.65, while Bachman finished with a 9.6.
At the banquet last night, NC State's Colleen Johnson was named the Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year.
