KINSTON, N.C. - David Scoggin and Matt Repec drove in three runs apiece, and Winthrop used three pitchers to hold 16th-ranked NC State in check Wednesday night as the Eagles handed the Wolfpack an 8-5 defeat at Grainger Stadium. The loss, the Wolfpack's second in a row, dropped the Pack to 21-6 on the season. Winthrop improved to 13-11 with the win.
The win went to Winthrop starter Chase Edwards, who evened his record at 3-3 after allowing four runs on eight hits in five innings. He did not walk or strike out a batter. Mike Honce came in from center field with one down and two on in the bottom of the eighth and worked 1-2/3 scoreless innings to earn his first save of the season. Wolfpack starter David Hicks (2-1) took the loss after allowing six runs on nine hits in two-plus innings of work. He walked one and struck out one.
The Eagles did the bulk of their damage in the early innings, starting in the top of the first, when the jumped on Hicks for three runs right out of the gate. Matt Matkovich reached on a one-out single and Daniel Carte walked. David Scoggin ripped a two-run double off the wall in left-center field, and Matt Repec belted a two-out RBI double to left.
The Wolfpack wasted no time jumping right back into the game. Marc Maynor led off the bottom of the first with a single to left, and Joe Gaetti beat out a perfect bunt past the pitcher on the right side of the diamond. Justin Riley hit the next pitch for a two-run double to left field, and Colt Morton hit the next pitch after that for a two-run home run to left, giving NC State a 4-3 lead after one inning.
Unfortunately for the home team, that was the end of the scoring for the Wolfpack for the next six innigns. Winthrop, meanwhile, came right back in the top of the second. Kyle Roberson and Matkovich hit one-out singles, and Carte singled to right to drive in Roberson. Scoggin singled to left to drive in Matkovich with the go-ahead run, putting the Eagles ahead 4-3. Winthrop added two more in the top of the third. Grant Niedenfeuhr led off with a single, ending the night for Hicks, and Repec greeted reliever Brandon Shipwash with a home run to left, giving the Eagles a 7-4 lead.
Shipwash restored order through the sixth, but ran into trouble in the seventh, when Roberson led off with a single, stole second and went to third on Matkovich's single to center. That was the end of the line for Shipwash. Joey Devine came on to pitch for the Wolfpack and got Daniel Carte to ground into a double play, with Roberson scoring on the play to give Winthrop an 8-4 lead.
The Wolfpack finally got a run back in the bottom of the eighth, but blew a chance for a big inning. Pinch-hitter Lee Mezistrano doubled to left and Chad Orvella walked. The runners moved up to second and third on a wild pitch, and Matt Camp drew a one-out walk to load the bases. Jeremy Dutton got Mezistrano home with a sacrifice fly. That made it 8-5, but after Maynor walked to reload the bases, the Wolfpack left the sacks juiced.
