RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State cruised by Appalachian State on Friday afternoon at the Cary Tennis Complex, with a 6-1 win in regional action. The Wolfpack (5-5, 0-3) evened out its record with the win over the Mountaineers (5-4, 0-2), getting solid performances all-around, sweeping the doubles matches and taking five of the six singles points. The win for the Wolfpack marks its second straight.
The Wolfpack clinched the doubles point with quick wins in the number one and three matches. Kristin Lam and Loni Worsley picked up an 8-3 decision over Donna Altenburger and Kasia Finkowsksa in the top-seeded match, and Myrna Bawono and Jennifer Jassawalla clinched the point with a win over Elena Berger and Victoria Moody, 8-0. Danielle Stadelmann and Carmen Torres needed a little longer to put away the Mountaineer tandem of Tammy Beaulieu and Salem Kirven, but prevailed with an 8-6 victory.
NC State's two, three and four seeded singles players came off of the court within a short period of one another, each with a win. Stadelmann was the first to score for the Pack, downing Berger in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3. Worsley, who is riding a six-match win streak, needed just two sets to put away Finkowska, 6-4, 6-1. She is listed as the No. 110 player in the ITA's latest individual rankings. Bawono took down Moody, 6-2, 6-2.
Jassawalla's match, full of long points, ended in a 6-2, 6-1 victory, her third consecutive win. She picked up her win as the four-seed against Altenberger.
Torres' match took a while to complete, but she emerged as a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Kirven.
The Mountaineers lone point came at the one-seed by Tammy Beaulieu. She won against Lam in three sets. Beaulieu took the first set, 6-3, but Lam took the second set very quickly to force the third. Beaulieu took the 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win.
NC State will hit the road and return to conference action against Florida State on Sunday at 12-noon. The Seminoles enter the match-up ranked 45th in the ITA Poll, released this past Wednesday.
NC State has rescheduled its match versus Winthrop, which was cancelled last Wednesday when rain showers moved through the area. The match will be played at the Cary Tennis Center next Friday, March 28, at 2 p.m.
