
NC State Gymnastics Finishes Second in Governor's Cup

Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State gymnastics team finished second in the eighth annual Governor's Cup with a season-best score of 195.675. North Carolina won the meet with its score of 196.775, Towson was third with a 194.575, and Maryland finished fourth with a 194.300. The duo of NC State and North Carolina outscored Maryland and Towson 392.450-388.875 to win the Governor's Cup for the state of North Carolina for the second straight year.
NC State (6-3) started the night out on vault and scored a season-high 48.825, the 13th best vault score in school history. Junior Molly Pennington recorded her first career title with a score of 9.925, becoming one of only four gymnasts in school history to score at least a 9.925 on vault. Classmate Leah Sabo was close behind in sixth, with a season-best 9.825. Junior Cheryl Potacco and freshman Kylah Bachman each scored a 9.725 and tied for 11th. Senior Adina Stock placed 17th with her score of 9.625.
NC State then moved over to bars and notched a team score of 48.450. Sabo once again set a new personal-best with her 9.9 on bars for a first place finish. Sophomore Kelley Kello and senior Marlyn Madey finished tied for fifth with scores of 9.8. Adina Stock was 16th with her 9.7.
The Wolfpack earned its first score over 49.0 on beam, when NC State turned in a season-best performance of 49.025. Sabo once again led the way for NC State with her score of 9.85 for second place. Kello scored a 9.825 and was fifth. Seniors Madey and Cara Dougherty each turned in a 9.8 and tied for seventh. Sophomore Cori Goldstein was 10th with her score of 9.75.
NC State finished the meet on floor, notching the fourth-best team score in school history, a 49.375. Goldstein scored a second place finish with her career-best 9.95. Seniors Dougherty and Stock both scored 9.9 and finished in a tie for sixth. Classmate Madey was 11th with her score of 9.85, and Sabo completed her fourth event with a 9.775 to take 16th.
Sabo had a very strong night in the all-around scoring a 39.350 and placing third. She topped 39.000 for the first time this season, and her score tonight ranks seventh best in NC State history.
NC State will be back in action this Friday, with the Wolfpack hosting the Hearts Invitational at 7:00 p.m. NC State will compete against Rhode Island, Utah State and William & Mary.
