CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina applied the early knockout punch by winning the first six matches of the night and coasted to a 22-13 victory over NC State in college wrestling action at UNC's Carmichael Auditorium. The Tar Heels improved to 8-4 overall in dual matches and 4-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Wolfpack, which lost for the third time in a row, fell to 5-8 overall and 1-2 in the ACC.
The match began with the 174-pound match, and North Carolina's Mark Canty pinned NC State?s Courtney Bird to give UNC a fast 6-0 lead. Dusty Heist followed that with a 12-8 decision over Jon Godwin to push the lead to 9-0 after two matches.
At 197, David Dashiell continued UNC?s early dominance by handing Matt Gulliver an 8-4 loss, and Tar Heels heavyweight Ryan Adams made the score 16-0 with an 8-0 major decision over Leroy Harris.
That set the stage for the headline attraction of the evening, the 125-pound match between two-time defending ACC champion and 19th-ranked George Cintron and North Carolina All-American Chris Rodrigues, ranked 18th. This was the fifth meeting between the two over the last two years, and Cintron had won the previous three, each a crowd-pleasing thriller, and each decided in extra periods. And so it was again tonight, with Rodrigues managing to win a sudden-death tie-breaker by maintaining the top position for the 30-second sd period. The loss snapped Cintron's 11-match winning streak and dropped him to 14-5 on the season.
At 133 pounds, 18th-ranked Evan Sola remained unbeaten in ACC competition for his career at 10-0 with a 6-0 decision over the Wolfpack?s Daniel Pacitti, giving the Heels a 22-0 advantage. That was all the points the Tar Heels scored, but it was more than they needed.
NC State finally got on the scoreboard thanks to Ryan McCallum's 6-4 decision over UNC freshman Brian Baglio, and the Wolfpack's Jake Giamoni and North Carolina's Chris DiGuiseppe waged another terrific overtime bout at 149 pounds, with Giamoni winning 6-4 to stretch his winning streak to six.
Scott Garren, ranked 14th for the Wolfpack at 157, picked up NC State?s third consecutive decision of the night, 9-4 over Garrett Atkinson. Garren, who has battled injuries all season, is now 11-0. At 165, the final match of the evening, the Wolfpack's Dustin Kawa ran his winning streak to 12 with a sudden-death decision over Jimmy O'Connor. Kawa now is 16-3 on the season.
