The NC State volleyball team will host the final two home matches of the season, beginning with a 7 p.m. match against Maryland on Thursday night and then a 7 p.m. match against Virginia on Friday night. Both matches will be held at Reynolds Coliseum. During the Wolfpack's match against the Terrapins, five lucky students will have the chance to win a pair of football tickets to the NC State/Maryland football game on November 22. The Virginia match will be Senior Night, as the Wolfpack will honor seniors Crystal Shannon and Caroline Frede.
Junior middle blocker Maya Mapp leads NC State (7-20, 0-12) offensively, with 228 kills off a team-best .293 attack percentage. Also stepping up is fellow junior Melanie Rowe (126 kills) and sophomore Adeola Kosoko (121 kills). Shannon will look to add to her team-best 726 assists. With 2,129 assists in her career, she needs only 232 more assists to move into sole possession of fifth place in that category in school history. Meanwhile, Frede will anchor the team's defense, as she enters with a season-best 316 digs, giving her an average of 3.40 digs per game, which is tied for seventh-best in the ACC.
Maryland (21-5, 10-2) is coming off its biggest win of the season, a 3-2 victory over then undefeated and fourth-ranked Georgia Tech. Sophomore middle blocker Stephanie Smith leads the Terps with 278 kills, while fellow middle blocker Rachel Wagener is close behind her with 238 kills of her own. Defensively, Maryland features three players with over 100 total blocks thus far in Wagener, Smith and setter Aimee Huddleston.
Virginia (21-7, 5-7) also enters this week coming off a 3-2 win, this time over Clemson. The Cavaliers are led by senior outside hitter Paige Davis, who has tallied 383 kills thus far. Setters Emily Kirkwood and Kathleen Branagh have dished out 791 and 434 assists respectively. Meanwhile, it is the play of middle hitters Alexis Geocaris and Shannon Boyle, who have combined for 238 total blocks, that makes Virginia's defense dangerous.
