Senior All-America candidate and preseason State Farm Wade Trophy candidate Kaayla Chones is one of 36 women's basketball players featured in the newest section of WBCA.org: The State Farm Wade Trophy Page. The new addition of WBCA.org will highlight the history of the award, provide updated weekly statistics and profiles of each NCAA Division I player in contention for the trophy recognized as "The Heisman of Women's Basketball."
The State Farm Wade Trophy, now in its 27th year and named after the late, legendary coach Lily Margaret Wade, a three-time national champion at Delta State, made her debut in 1978 as the first-ever women's national player of the year award recipient in college basketball. The award is organized by the WBCA in conjunction with the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS).
Chones, a two-time All-ACC honoree, has led NC State in points and rebounds the past two seasons averaging over 13 points and nearly eight boards per game during that time. In addition the Pepper Pike, Ohio native became the 21st NC State player to record 1,000 career points last season. She was named the team's Most Valuable Player as a sophomore and redshirt junior, and was voted the team's best Offensive Player.
During the season, WBCA.org will spotlight "Wade Watch" match-ups. Chones and the Wolfpack will be on the radar when the Pack hosts Texas in the Jimmy V Classic for Women on Nov. 23. Follow the action online at www.wbca.org and catch up with the Wade Trophy candidates on The State Farm Wade Trophy Page.
NC State will open its regular season schedule as host to Loyola Marymount on Friday, Nov. 21, at 6:30 p.m. to begin the 2003-04 slate.
