Wolfpack Volleyball Falls to Tar Heels, 3-1

Freshman outside hitter Julia Reis finished with a team-best 14 kills to go with 21 digs defensively, before suffering an injury to her left knee during the fourth game of NC State's volleyball match with rival North Carolina Tuesday night at Carmichael Auditorium. The Tar Heels eventually took the match, 3-1, winning by the scores of 30-21, 30-27, 29-31, 30-13. The loss put the Wolfpack at 7-19 overall, 0-11 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while North Carolina improved to 17-8, 8-3 in conference play.
The extent of the injury to Reis is yet to be determined, as she will see a specialist Wednesday. Meanwhile, junior middle blocker Maya Mapp added 11 kills off a .333 attack percentage to help pace NC State offensively. Senior libero Caroline Frede and sophomore outside hitter Kayla Ragan provided strength along the back row, recording 18 and 10 digs respectively. Setters Melissa Rabe and Crystal Shannon combined to dish out 45 assists on the night.
Leading the Tar Heels was outside hitter Dani Nyenhuis, who tallied a match-high 17 kills to go with a team-best 18 digs. Middle hitters Aletha Green and Amy Beaver also stepped up for North Carolina, combining for 26 kills, while Green finished with eight total blocks. Outside hitter Meg Eckert and defensive specialist Caroline deRoeck each recorded double-digits in digs with 15 and 13 respectively, while setters McKenzie Byrd and Norma Cortez ended the match combining for 61 assists.
The Wolfpack will return back to Raleigh shortly before heading back out of town, as it plays at Florida State on Saturday night. Match time is set for 6 p.m.
