RALEIGH, N.C. -- On a cold and rainy day at Method Road Soccer, the Wolfpack women's soccer team shined brightly with a 6-1 win over the Howard Bison on Oct. 28. Using a relentless offensive attack and a strong defense that allowed only four shots, NC State (9-7-1) scored three times in the opening 18 minutes and led 5-0 at the half. Six Wolfpack players scored goals, including the first career goals for freshmen Brittany Cuellar and Christina Mann. Sophomore goalkeeper Kim Selz started the game between the posts and played the first half, allowing zero goals.
NC State would strike early and often in the contest, taking a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute with the third goal of the season for sophomore midfielder Lindsey DeLorenze. She took a long ball from senior defender Tara Knauss, who picked up her first of two assists in the match, towards the middle of the field. DeLorenze broke free and placed the ball into the lower left corner of the goal.
Junior forward Erin Griswold would put NC State up 2-0 on her team-leading ninth goal of the season. Freshman defender Megan Sadler notched her first career assist by playing the ball to the right to Knauss, who again kicked an arching ball to Griswold in the middle of the field for the score.
NC State went up 3-0 as freshman midfielder Carol Tognetti scored her fourth goal of the season at the 18:00 minute mark. She hustled toward the net as a Howard defender played the ball back to the Bison goalkeeper, Angel Ughiovhe. Ughiovhe tried to clear the ball but had her kick blocked by Tognetti and the ball bounded into the net from 15 yards out.
The Wolfpack would score again at 31:52 when Cuellar, a midfielder, scored after a scramble for the ball in front of the net. Cuellar put the ball away past a diving Ughiovhe. Mann would follow with her first career goal with 47 seconds left to play in the first half. She started a run on the left side and took the pass from another freshman, defender Nicole Mayo. Mann dribbled towards the goal before beating Ughiovhe to the near post.
Up 5-0 at the half, coach Laura Kerrigan pulled the starter Selz for freshman Megan Connors, who had played in ten previous matches on the season. Connors held the Bison in check, recording a save and allowing a goal in the 78th minute when Dayna West chipped in a towering cross that hit the crossbar before falling in front of West.
Senior forward Lindsey Underwood scored her final goal at Method Road with a perfectly placed header off of a cross in the 50th minute. The Wolfpack went up 6-0 on the play, as Underwood headed the cross from Griswold into the top left corner of the net for her seventh goal of the season, second best on the team.
The Wolfpack out shot the Bison 22-4 and forced 10 corners to Howard's two. NC State's defense was stellar, holding Howard's offense in check the entire game.
NC State will wrap up it's regular season with a road Atlantic Coast Conference showdown with Wake Forest at 7:00 p.m on Nov. 1. NC State will then compete in the ACC Tournament, Nov. 6,7 and 9 at SAS Soccer Stadium in Cary, N.C.
