Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State men's soccer team earned its second win of the weekend by downing UNC Greensboro 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Method Road. The Wolfpack (8-6-1) won both games of the Big Four Tournament this weekend, defeating Charlotte, 2-0, on Friday, and the Spartans (7-6-2), 2-1, today. After a scoreless first half, NC State's Aaron King took over, scoring both goals for the Wolfpack, with the game-winner coming with just six minutes remaining in the contest.
After both teams were held scoreless in the first 45 minutes, NC State struck first. Junior Martin Cini played a long ball to King on the left side of the field. King then dribbled by an UNCG defender into the box and was able to score the game's first goal in the 61st minute.
The Spartans would answer in the 77th minute with a goal of their own. James Goodman dribbled down the right side of the NC State defense and found Randi Patterson in the penalty box. Patterson won a scramble in front of the Wolfpack net and netted the score at 1-1 at the 76:58 mark.
As the game appeared heading to overtime, King struck again with his fourth game-winning goal of the season. The Wolfpack's second goal came the exact same way as the first, with Cini finding King deep in UNCG territory, and King once again was one-on-one with the keeper. King's team-leading 10th goal of the season came at the 84:18 mark.
Both goalies were extremely busy in the nets, as the two teams combined for 33 shots with 23 going on goal. NC State's Jorge Gonzalez got the win with his seven saves, while UNCG's Jay Benfield finished with 13 saves.
NC State will on the road next weekend, playing at Radford on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
