Men's Soccer Battles #3 North Carolina to Tie

Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State men's soccer team battled No. 3 North Carolina to a 1-1 tie Sunday afternoon at Method Road Soccer Stadium. The Wolfpack (6-6-1, 2-3-1 ACC) improve to 5-0-1 at Method Road this season, beating two top-25 teams in ACC league play, and tying the No. 3 Tar Heels (10-2-3, 2-1-1 ACC) today. The two teams would each score a goal in the second half, then battle 10-v-10 for a large portion of the match due to separate red cards issued.
After a scoreless first half, NC State struck first. Senior Chris Gannon headed in his second goal of the season off of a corner kick from sophomore Federico Peria at the 57:14 mark. The assist was Peria's team-leading seventh of the season.
North Carolina would even things up in the 70th minute. Freshman Jamie Watson took an errant NC State header and tallied his fifth goal of the season at the 69:50 mark.
The score would remain 1-1 till the end. Both teams had their chances, with UNC's Wes Shull hitting the crossbar in the 77th minute, and the Pack's Santiago Fusilier hitting the post in the 80th minute. UNC won the shot battle 24-11, including a 5-1 advantage in overtime. NC State's Jorge Gonzalez came up big in the nets for the Wolfpack with five saves, while the Tar Heel's Ford Williams finished with two.
NC State will return to action this upcoming weekend by hosting two games in the Big Four Tournament. The Wolfpack will host Charlotte Friday at 3:30 p.m., then host UNC Greensboro Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
