Outside hitter Valerie Rydberg finished with a match-high 14 kills to lead the Wake Forest Demon Deacons past NC State in volleyball action Friday night at Reynolds Coliseum, 3-0. The loss dropped the Wolfpack to 6-15 overall, 0-7 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while the Deacons improved to 15-5, 5-3 in conference play.
Wake Forest jumped out to an early lead in games one and two, but NC State would manage some mid-game comebacks. The Demon Deacons would prove to be too much for the Wolfpack, however, as they took game one 30-19, and game two 30-18. But new life would surge through the NC State players in game three, as the Wolfpack took the early lead. Wake would come back to tie it, and the seesaw battle would begin, only to have the Deacons come out on top once again, this time by the score of 30-23.
Junior middle blocker Maya Mapp finished with 12 kills off a match-best .474 attack percentage for the Wolfpack, while freshman outside hitter Julia Reis and junior middle blocker Paige Gilliam each contributed offensively with six and five kills respectively. Freshmen setters Melissa Rabe and Bruna Maraccini dished out 15 and 16 assists. For Maraccini, the 16 assists was a career-best. Senior libero Caroline Frede came up big defensively for NC State, tallying a match-best 16 digs, while Kayla Ragan also finished in double-digits in that category with 10.
Joining Rydberg offensively for the Deacons was Lauren Peterson, who added 10 kills off a .333 attack percentage. Setter Erin Borhart finished with 35 assists, while Kim Stern ended the match with eight kills and 10 digs for Wake.
The Wolfpack will next face the Duke Blue Devils Saturday night at Reynolds Coliseum. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
