The NC State volleyball team will look to echo last year's success when it takes a short break from conference play and travels to Greenville, N.C. to take on East Carolina Tuesday night. The 2002 version of the Wolfpack defeated the Pirates in three games, led by middle blocker Maya Mapp's 18 kills and seven block assists. Tuesday's match time is set to begin at 7 p.m.
NC State's (6-13) offensive attack features three players who have totaled over 100 kills thus far. Freshman outside hitter Julia Reis is the team's leader with 217 kills to her account, while Mapp is second on the team with 162 and junior outside hitter Melanie Rowe is third with 114. Helping to direct the attack is senior setter Crystal Shannon, who has 655 assists to go with 112 digs.
Defensively, Mapp and fellow middle blocker Paige Gilliam will be looked upon to help shutdown the Pirates' offense around the net, as they have already combined for 125 total blocks on the year. Providing aid and leadership along the back row is senior libero Caroline Frede, who leads the team with 223 digs thus far.
East Carolina enters with an 8-13 mark overall, and is led by middle blocker Jaime Bevan and outside hitter Pam Ferris. The duo is the strength for the Pirates' offense and has recorded 197 and 194 kills respectively in 2003. Meanwhile, setter Jessica Vick leads the team in assists with 564, while backup setter Heidi Krug has weighed in with 289 assists of her own. Ferris and Bevan have also made their presences felt defensively, as Ferris is second on the team in digs with 169, while Bevan is the team's leader in total blocks with 85.
